Week Seven
Although Louis left the show, the rules still required Brandy to eliminate two of the contestants from the group. Jake received an invitation to stay all the same. This one was the most interesting of the bunch. The stationary had various colors and shimmer of an oil spill. The ink of the missive stating he was to stay another week was a brilliant satin-white that stood out against the dark background.
He wondered what percentage of the show’s budget went toward stationary and added the invitation to the ever-growing pile.
Jake felt somewhat guilty he had played a role in Louis’ exit and said as much in later confessional interviews. However, in his heart of hearts, he enjoyed having his own room. The privacy after a long day of cameras following him around was absolutely blissful. Not that he would ever admit it on camera, but he kind of hoped the new rooming designations would make it so he would have his own room for the rest of his stay on the show.
His sleep schedule returned to normal and the only remaining anxiety was about what was truly going on with Lance. Jake was beginning to develop a taxonomy for being watched. Having a camera pointed at him was different from having Brandy look at him which was different from having Lance watch him. This was true even when Jake couldn’t see the viewer looking at him. They all burned into his back differently. The bedroom was the only place he could be certain no one was watching him and, frankly, he was beginning to develop something of a complex about it.
The group date that week was a simple wine tasting. Well, not so simple. The wines were unlike any Jake had ever seen before. They came in strange glass bottles blown into shapes that looked more like modern art than something serving a utilitarian purpose. Some of the liquids produced came in colors no one there had been accustomed to seeing in wine: poppy, periwinkle or emerald.
Not being particularly fond of drinking, Jake held back even more than his already reluctant peers. Much like the champagne on the boat ride over in the first episode, Jake knew this date had been planned to lower the inhibitions of the contestants. He wasn’t all that eager to fall into that trap especially now that he was one of the few contestants left on the show and could no longer simply blend in with all of the rest of the boisterous sots.
It looked as if everyone else was on to this tactic as well, since everyone nursed their glasses of wine very slowly. It was almost humorous. Since it was just a tasting, only a small amount was put into each glass, and everyone was able to make each sample last nearly an hour.
Nancy looked concerned by this. Jake could tell she needed to get some sort of confrontation or gaffe out of this excursion. It was tailor made for a late in
